Around a third of Brits reckon gardening is a bore, and one in five admit they neglect it because of it. Let’s face it, in 2026, most of us don’t have the time or energy to be out in the garden every weekend. When life is chaotic and busy, the garden gets to the bottom of the to-do list.

The thing is, once gardening stops being fun, it starts to feel like an impossible task, too. Without even a basic grasp of gardening basics or a simple routine, what should be a couple of minutes’ work can end up feeling like hours of tedious work. As a result, by the time you decide to take care of the garden, there’s so much to do that it’s hard to figure out where to start.

So, why not make 2026 the year of falling in love with a garden that is easy to maintain and attractive? Does it need some effort? Yes, but it doesn’t have to take over your life, and it’s worth it!

Stay on Top of Weeding

Weeding is every gardener’s pet peeve because it seems like it never ends. If you miss a few weeks, then suddenly weeds are growing everywhere. What can you do?

Here’s the thing: aiming for perfection won’t work. Instead, it’s about being smart about it. Regular weeding keeps your plants healthy, and helps maintain the garden. But you can try to reduce the workload with companion planting to stop weed growth.

Define Garden Zones

Ultimately, when your garden is a single zone, it can look messy fast. When you divide it into zones, you can create a structure that is easier to maintain. For example, you can have a meadow zone, which requires little maintenance. This also means that each zone is self-contained, so you can maintain one at a time rather than having to tackle the full area.

Store Tools Properly

There’s no gardening without gardening tools, and that’s where storage is a game-changer. If you tend to leave your tools scattered around, this makes it tough to look after the garden.

For a start, you may not find what you need easily, especially if you don’t have a specific storage area. Additionally, tools left outside may get damaged, which means they become unusable. Finally, this also adds to the general clutter that your garden generates, which can put you off looking after it.

Trim Lawn Edges

Messy lawn edges can make your garden look messy, even when you mow the lawn regularly. What does it look like?

  • Grass creeping into paths
  • Patches growing randomly around borders
  • General lack of lawn structure

You may want to keep those edges trimmed, especially in awkward corners and borders that the lawn mower can’t reach. A string trimmer may seem like a big investment, but it can truly transform the look and feel of your garden and make general maintenance easier.

Prune Shrubs and Hedges

Shrubs and hedges grow slowly, so you may not notice issues until it’s too late. As a rule of thumb, you should prune them at least once a year, especially in areas that are going over paths, lawns, and seating zones.

You don’t need to prune them into perfect shapes. Simple trims can work wonders without being complicated or time-demanding.

Keep Mulch and Compost Contained

Mulch and compost can help keep your garden healthy, and they’re also a great way to repurpose biowastes. But, while these are useful, they can make your garden look messy if you leave them uncovered in the open. Besides, it’s the type of material that will attract pests and get soggy.

Ideally, you want to store them in a contained space, such as using jumbo bags to keep them neat and organised, plus it’s readily available for when you need it.

Maintain a Consistent Lawn Height

Does your grass grow evenly everywhere? As a general rule of thumb, most people have uneven patches of grass in the lawn, which can be caused by different issues:

  • Uneven terrain makes it hard to mow everything at the same height
  • Different soil composition means the grass can grow faster or slower in areas
  • Not using the same mowing settings across the garden

This may not sound like much, but in reality, it can not only make your garden look messy, but it can also make it hard to maintain. Ideally, you should stick to the minimum height that works across the whole garden and remove obstacles that can block the mower, such as rocks or awkward landscaping designs.

Schedule Short and Regular Maintenance

Ultimately, the idea of spring cleaning for the garden sets you up for unfair expectations. When you leave garden maintenance to only one time in the year, it’s when things get out of hand and need much longer.

It’s a lot easier to spend 10 or 15 minutes every weekend in the garden because this feels like short and manageable chunks of time you can dedicate to your property without affecting your day-to-day schedule.
