Why Summer is the Season to Finally Listen to Your Body

There’s a particular kind of exhaustion that arrives in summer. Not the tired-from-travelling kind, or the sun-drunk kind. It’s the exhaustion of having pushed through the first half of the year on willpower alone, and suddenly, with the pace slowing just slightly, your body finally gets a word in.
I see this constantly, both in my own life and in the women I work with through Dr Clare Clinic. We spend January through June performing wellness: the morning routines, the gym sessions, the green juices. We tick the boxes, but we rarely stop long enough to ask whether any of it is actually landing. But summer, with its longer light and slower rhythm, is when real restoration becomes possible.

There’s a physiological reason for this. Extended daylight naturally supports your circadian rhythm, which governs everything from cortisol release to digestion to how deeply you sleep. When your body clock is properly synced, which summer makes far easier, your stress hormones begin to settle into a healthier pattern. That’s why so many of us feel a strange, almost uncomfortable stillness in July. It isn’t laziness. It’s your nervous system finally downshifting after months of running hot.

Naturopathic nutrition teaches us that the body communicates in symptoms: fatigue, bloating, skin flare-ups, mood dips. These aren’t inconveniences to be pushed through. They’re intelligent signals. This summer, I’d encourage you to treat those signals as data rather than drama. Ask yourself what your body has been trying to tell you since January that you’ve been too busy to hear.

Start with your gut.

An unsettled digestive system is often the first sign that your nervous system is still in overdrive, because the gut and the brain are in constant conversation through the vagus nerve. When one is stressed, the other feels it. A high-quality probiotic, I recommend Purolabs’ probiotic complex for its allergen-free formulation, can support that gut-brain axis reset as you transition into slower summer weeks. Pair it with fibre-rich seasonal produce: berries, courgettes, fresh herbs, leafy greens. Your gut bacteria thrive on variety, and summer is when British produce is at its most diverse and most affordable.

Your skin will tell you the truth too.

As someone who has spent two decades in dermatology and skincare, I can tell you that summer skin flare-ups are rarely about the sun alone. They’re usually about accumulated stress, dehydration and a gut that’s been neglected for six months. Clear skin in September starts with what you do in July.

Then, simply: rest without guilt.

Lie in the garden. Eat seasonally. Hydrate with intention, which means water first thing in the morning, herbal teas through the day, and easing off the third coffee you’ve been using as scaffolding. The women who come to me having done this for even two weeks in July consistently report clearer skin, better sleep, and a mental clarity that no January reset ever delivered.

If you need structure, keep it gentle.

One unhurried walk in morning light. One proper meal eaten sitting down, away from your phone. One evening a week with no plans at all. That’s it. Restoration doesn’t require a retreat in Bali. It requires permission, and most of us are terrible at giving ourselves that.
Summer isn’t a break from your wellness practice. It IS the practice. The longer days, the slower diary, the abundance of fresh food: these are the conditions your body has been waiting for all year. Let your body lead this season. It already knows exactly what it needs.

Your only job is to finally listen.
